After a few setbacks, it’s great news for Michigan that the LG Chem plant in Holland is ramping up production of lithium-ion batteries for the Chevrolet Volt and the Ford Focus. It means that more of those two models, assembled by Michigan workers in Michigan factories, will have Michigan-made batteries in them.
Company officials said they would activate three production lines and install two more assembly lines at the plant by September 2015, according to a report on MLive.
In the report, LG Chem spokesman Randy Boileau said the factory’s employees completed “pre-production testing” with its primary customer, General Motors Corp. and began ramping up production in July.
“Once manufactured, lithium ion batteries require a settling period before use, so the company anticipates making its first shipments in late September or early October,” Boileau was quoted as saying.
