Well, how do you like those numbers? In their third full year, sales of plug-in electric cars nearly doubled in 2013 over 2012.
The 2013 total, more than 96,000 electric vehicles, was a huge increase over the 2012 total of about 53,000. The 2013 total was very nearly split evenly between plug-in hybrids, like the Built by Michigan Chevrolet Volt, and pure battery powered vehicles.
Even more impressive, last year's total was more than five times the total of 17,500 in 2011.
Check out the graph from the Electric Drive Transportation Association of cumulative electric vehicle sales since 2010, and there’s no wonder why we’re so optimistic about the future of this industry.
And with several new models being introduced--raising the total to 16 different plug-in cars now available--sales are likely to grow again this year.
So as we start a new year here at the Built by Michigan coalition, we have a lot to look forward to as this industry grows, bringing more jobs and more prosperity to our state.
Thanks for all you do.
